Spitfire crash tragedy

September 16 1946, coming into land at Bovingdon, a Spitfire crashed into a field at Bourne End. The pilot was killed. The crash occurred at 5.30pm. Mrs Hope Gardiner of the White Horse pub in Bourne End, who was standing in her garden saw the wing fall off the plane. The dead pilot was named as Flying Officer Cresswell Turner.
